Sketch Outline

Intro

This paper will prove: Tess suffers 'the cruelty of lust and the fragility of love' because of her family, Alec, and Angel.

Body

I know/believe this is true because

NOTE: you must be able to provide a minimum of three reasons/supporting ideas and because of the length of the paper and complexity of the novel, you may have four or five reasons. This is the part of the paper that will PROVE your thesis or convince the reader that you are on to something:

1. The first reason is…. Tess's family causes lust and love to her, in many various ways.

Specific Support from story you will reference:

-them wanting the best for Tess when she goes to Alec's to make something of herself

-the belief that they are of D'Urberville lineage harms Tess

-Tess' parents' love changes for her when she arrives home w/o Angel and they doubt her marriage

-Her baby Sorrow dying

What do the secondary sources have to say about this particular reason?

-I have not really found information regarding this. I am going based on mostly discussion our class had during the discussion posts and my own opinion.

--I will look for actual sources

2. The second reason is…. Alec is a main source of lust for Tess and a little love

Specific Support from story you will reference:

-Claims Tess as kin, he forces her to 'love' him---> he rapes her and she gets pregnant

-Basically stalks Tess at Flintcomb-Ash

-Makes her love him towards the end of the book and lies to her

What do the secondary sources have to say about this particular reason?

-Alec's betrayal of her really harms her

--mostly, again, just primary sources and personal/class opinions

3. The third reason is… Angel is another player in Tess' lust and love

Specific Support from story you will reference:

-The not mutual love between Tess and Angel

  • Tess lusts for perfect life with Angel, but finds hurt

  • Angel stopping loving Tess after her confession

  • Tess and Angel's short reunion of love before her death

What do the secondary sources have to say about this particular reason?

-Angel is a very large part of the fragility of love Tess feels because she put everything she had into loving him and he let her down so much

--I need to look deeper into my sources to find more concrete evidence, even though everything is opinion oriented because it is one person's take against another's.

  1. (Etc. for as many reasons as you have) The differences between Sue/Rose Mary/Tess

-differences off relationships between Sue/Rose Mary/Tess and Angel

-Angel's pursuit of Sue/Rose Mary/Tess is different

-different kinds of love with Angel

Conclusion

Advance and defend your argument/interpretation

Expand your thesis into a conclusion that makes clear your position, which should echo your analysis and discussion of the topics.

Throughout Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Tess goes through many trials and tribulations of love and lust. She discovers how fragile love is in many instances through interactions with her family, Alec, and Angel. Tess also is deceived into lust by these same people. Because these people are so close to her, whether by choice or force, they are in the most powerful position to influence Tess and do permanent damage to her.
