Diagnostc Essay

There are many times of great innovation and change in the history of the world. So many wars, ideas, and other things were shaping the way world worked. While picking just one time to visit is a challenge in itself, but one time in particular stand out. If I could go back in time it would be to America in the 1960’s.
America in the 1960’s was going through many social and cultural changes. This time shaped everything from civil rights to music. Being able to visit this time would allow me the opportunity to witness some of the most important events in Americas history.
One of the things I would have to see and experience would be Martin Luther King J.R.’s speech son racial equality. When he gave his “ I have a dream” speech it was very inspirational to many people. This inspiration was instrumental in the civil rights movement.
Another place I would have to see is Woodstock. This concert brought together some of the most amazing performers in the history of music. Artists like Jimi Hendrix, and Santana put on legendary performances that would be remembered forever.
In 1964 the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. This is one of the most memorable performances in rocks history. It was universally known as the event that launched the Beatles career. Watching them perform would be an unforgettable experience.
There are hundreds of events throughout the worlds history that would be amazing to see. While each one is unique and would offer unforgettable memories, the 1960’s in America is the time that s most important to me.

My Dream Job

My Dream Job

Technology today is quickly advancing and hard to keep up with. For example, it costs a lot of money to keep up with technology. They are always coming out with new things like the MacBook Tablet, and the constant advancements of computers. I find it entertaining to use, fix, and repair this kind of technology. I would like to find a job that deals with these things, a job dealing with computers.

I have always been interested in computer repair just because, from a young age, I have known how to do from watching other people fix them. I find it the easiest thing to do on a computer, but something that can be very frustrating at times. It is usually the cheapest work to have done a computer in the three areas of computers I would like to work in.

The second area of computers I would like to work in is computer security. Computer security is keeping servers or computers safe from people that want to do bad to the system or steal something. It is a little bit more challenging to do than repair, but I like that you have to think like you are the person who is trying to break in, so you can make it so no one can break in.

My third and last area of computers I would like to work with is programming. Programming to me is the most difficult of the three, but that is why I like it; it gives me a challenge that I have to overcome. It is the thing I have had the least experience in but so far I have really enjoyed learning computer programming,

I enjoy working with people and helping people with their computer problems. With the three areas of computers, repair, security, and programming, I can mainly meet the needs of any computer problem and be able to help almost anyone. Also, I enjoy all areas of computers, so being able to work with all areas of computers instead of just one specific area is very important to me.

My Dream Job

There are many jobs that I would love to do such as forensic archaeologist, or a paleontologist, but my dream job would be a photographer, preferably a nature photographer.

I have always loved taking pictures of nature but the past few years I have been interested in it more. Whenever I would go on a trip or even in my backyard, I would take landscape pictures and close up pictures. Unfortunately, I have a regular digital camera so when I zoom in on objects, that picture looks good on the display, but when I print the picture, it’s blurry.

Of course photography has its challenges such as money and the weather. If I decided I wanted to be a serious photographer, I would have to buy a higher quality camera than just a regular digital camera. Digital cameras take good pictures but taking close up pictures of objects such as plants or flowers, it can be tricky. As I have said before the picture may look good on the camera but when it’s printed out, that object is a little blurry. Also, if I wanted to be a full-time nature photographer, I probably would be starving for money at first. I would need a part-time job in order to pay the bills, buy food, etc., until I am able to bring my full attention to photography. The weather sometimes would not cooperate but I could shoot amazing pictures as well. If I was taking pictures of mountains or any kind of landscape but it started to rain, I could take pictures of puddles, creeks, rivers or rain droplets.

If I could be a photographer without money problems, family obligations, and other obstacles, I would be taking photographs in a heart beat as a living. I plan on buying a better camera so I could take better pictures for myself and maybe someday for others!

If you had the necessary time, money, etc. to write any book, what book would you write?

If I had the necessary time, money, and resources to write a book, I would write about curing cancer. Twenty-nine years ago my aunt died of leukemia. She was initially given radiation for a tumor in her head. This was followed by chemo therapy for almost two years before she died at the age of fourteen. Now, today, a man at my church is dying from pancreatic cancer. He is also being treated with radiation and chemo therapy almost thirty years later. We’ve come a long way…NOT! Even with all the new advances in technology and medicine, people all around me are still dying of the dreaded disease called cancer. Before I would start writing my book, I would create a large team of researchers to go out and collect data. The data would include statistics telling how many people died of cancer in a given year. For example; “[Cancer] accounted for 7.9 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2007.” (1) After compiling as many useful facts as I possibly could find, I would write my book. It would include the types of cancer, types of treatments, and if there have been any new developments or discoveries in the search for a cure.
By finding the types of cancer, I would be able to find out how each type works and whether or not it is terminal. For example, if someone contracts pancreatic cancer, it is almost always terminal, but if someone were to find out how the cancer works and find its weakness, we might be able to come up with a lasting cure.
After finding the weaknesses of cancer we could begin to develop new treatments and expand on older treatments, such as chemo therapy and radiation, to make them more effective. This could not only save millions of lives, but also prevent the sadness and suffering of millions more people from losing a close friend or family member.
Recently, gene therapy has been discovered and used in cancer patients. It is an amazing new treatment and has been said to cure cancer in mice. My uncle had gene therapy used on him, but unfortunately it did not cure his prostate cancer. I hope eventually we will come up with a bullet proof cure.
After finishing my book about the types of cancer, types of treatments, and new treatment discoveries, anyone who wanted to know something about cancer, would be able to go to one place and find what they need, my book. I realize that cancer is an extremely broad topic and there have already been billions of dollars spent on research and development of cures, but if I could collect everyone’s research and make a book that included everything there is to know about cancer, I believe it could help the world immensely. This is because all the research would be in one place and if I did indeed have unlimited time, money, and resources, I would want to write about something that could be very meaningful and potentially have a worldwide impact on peoples’ health.

My Dream Job

Have you ever had a dream job? I have. I wanted to always pursue something in the medical field all my life. I have come up with what my dream job that field, it would be a pharmacist. My job would be a pharmacist for a few reasons.
First of all, I would love to be a pharmacist because I would be dealing with many challenges. As a pharmacist, I would go through many challenges. They would include making the decision on peoples medications. A pharmacist must be able to choice how much of a medication and if it reacts to any other medicine. I enjoy facing challenges and solving some of them.
Besides the challenges I’d like to be a pharmacist because I’d get to communicate and get to know people. I’m a talkative person who will talk to anyone. I love it when I can get to know someone by name and greet them with it. A pharmacist meets that goal and it’s something that I’d have to have in a job.
Even though it allows me to communicate and face challenges, it’s something I’ve always kind of wanted to do. I had things that I wanted to do. I had things that I wanted to go into besides a pharmacist but they didn’t meet all the things I wanted in a job. A pharmacist did and it’s something I am going to go into. I’ve put away all restrictions so I can make my dream job become reality to me.
In conclusion, my dream job is a pharmacist because of the challenges, the communication and because it is my dream job. I knew restrictions can’t get in the way and that’s why I’m going to be a pharmacist.

My Dream Job

There are many things that I would love to do if I didn't have to worry about money or any other obligations. I would love to spend time volunteering or doing something to help other people, but I am already helping others doing what I do now. One of my favorite things to do is go to big concerts or shows of local bands. Because I love music so much, my dream job would be to organize music events.
I have always loved music for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was young my parents always had music playing in our house. There was hardly ever a time when there wasn't music in the background. As I got older, I realized how much I loved music and started to explore different kinds. I listened to music whenever I had the chance. I still have music playing anytime I am home. I will watch TV on mute and listen to music at the same time. Luckily, my roommate is the same way and loves the same kind of music.
The first concert I ever went to was Good Charlotte. It seems pretty lame now but I think I was fourteen at the time so I guess it was cool at the time. I have went to a few big concerts and I always have fun, my favorite one was Elton John and Billy Joel last spring. Even though I enjoy big concerts, I love smaller shows much more. I always have more fun seeing less famous bands at smaller bars. My roommate, our friends, and I are always looking for a good band to see on the weekend.
By starting to go to these concerts and things I realized that I would love helping to organize them. It would be very fun for me to be able to help organize a concert one day. I think there would be a lot to learn working behind the scenes. It would be a very fun experience and something I would like to try to do one day.

My Doggie Daycare

I have two dogs that I love very much. Their names are Lucy and Mia. I have raised them both since they were puppies. There sad little faces are heartbreaking when I leave for school every day. If I could stay home with them, I would. Running a dog daycare is my dream job because, I could work from home, have some farm land, and spend time with animals.
Working from home would be great. I wouldn't have to send my soon to be daughter to daycare. She could learn firsthand how special dogs are. Also how each one has a very distinct personality. Lucy and Mia would love having us home. They would also appreciate other dogs coming over every day to play. Both my girls are very social dogs.
Country living has always been my preference. My family and I could buy a piece of land to run the dog daycare. We would all get plenty of room to run, making us a healthier family. The girls love running, so they would really like the extra room. That would give them a bigger fetch area too.
I have always had a special connection with animals. I honestly feel I was meant to work with them. My day is better when I spend it with my girls. They are always happy and fun to be around. Most importantly they never judge, they like everyone.
If I could choose any job I wanted, I would run a dog day care. Spending time at home with my family and other people's animals would be a wonderful way to live! I could raise my daughter myself and I wouldn't have to look at the sad faces of Lucy and Mia when I head out the door every morning.

The most important thing I have learned from my recent past is that whatever happens is what was supposed to happen and that there is no point in dwelling over something you can not change. You can go for hours on end thinking of the “what ifs” and the “if I could just redo that” but in the end it is not going to help the situation at all. I used to be a person who would dwell on a situation for hours until I found a quote in a magazine that changed everything for me.
For as long as I can remember I have worried about everything that could happen to me or the people I love, sometimes it got to the point where I could not sleep for weeks. One day I was reading a magazine and I saw a quote and it gave me a new perspective on life and I was so amazed how something that seems so small could have taken me by such surprise. The quote was “Remember whoever comes are the right people, whatever happens is the only thing that could have, whenever it starts is the right time and when its over, its over”.
That quote made me realize that all the hours I spend worrying about pointless things are hours I could be spending doing something that really matters. There is no telling what extent this lesson will take me as it was not long ago that I realized this but I know this is and will forever be the most important lesson I will take away from everything in life.
I have learned that I can not change what has already been done and that I can take away the lessons I learned from a mistake and make sure they do not happen the next time. I no longer spend hours worrying about things that have already happen or are in the future because I know that whatever happens is what was supposed to and there is no changing that.
Now that the quote “remember whoever comes are the right people, whatever happens is what was supposed to, whenever it starts is the right time and when its over, its over” has been burned into my brain, I can spend those hours I used to spend worrying, doing homework or spending time with my loved ones. In my short 18 years of life I think I have learned a lesson that I will never forget.

Memorable Event

It all started with my husband Paul and the love for horses. His family had horse when he was younger. My family did also, but my mother said we were scared of them.
I got my first horse when I was about twenty-five years old. She was a mare, dark brown in color, her name was Ginger. My husband showed me how to tack her up with riding gear, how to sit properly and use the reins.
We went out for my first ride. Ginger and I did great. She listened to me, even though I had no clue what I was doing. She just followed the other horse and I was fine with that.
My husband pointed out rules, while riding. Don't let her eat when she's walking. Make sure she listens to your commands. Make her go the way you want , otherwise she will get spoiled and think she can do what she wants.
I just nodded my head yes. But at that point I didn't care what she did as long as I stayed upright on the horse. I was so happy to finally own a horse and be able to ride one without freaking out. Due to the fact that horses are large animals and weight a ton.
One day we decided to trailer the horses to my mom and step-dads. We were going to help round up cattle. We tacked up the horses and were ready to ride.
I was sitting on Ginger in the coral and my husband came by with his horse kinda fast. I don't know what exactly happened next, Ginger started bucking and I couldn't hang on. I hit the dirt ground with a thump. I had knocked the wind out of my self. My husband jumped off his horse and came running over to me. Asking me if I was hurt, all I could do was shake my head, due to my air was slightly gone at that point.
My horse at that time, had taken off around the building. My step-dad, caught up with her and calmed her down. As I got off the ground and started to walk over to my horse, I told my husband I was never getting on that horse again. My step-dad told me to get on her and not to let her get away with doing that. He said, "You have to show her who's boss." I looked at him like he was crazy. But I got on Ginger with wobbly legs and rode off with her and the others, to round up cattle. I wasn't a happy cowgirl.
We did sell that horse, Ginger. I got a new horse, a better one. I did get better at riding and soon fell in love with horses. I have been bucked off since but if it wasn't for my step-dad, I wouldn't be the cowgirl I am today.

My Greatest Memories

Growing up, I moved a lot and met many great people on my path to discovering myself and what I loved. Yet, there have always been many fond memories of mine that I’m so proud to have accomplished. My best memory that comes to mind is making the choice to start leaning the violin in fifth grade. It’s an amazing, beautiful instrument and it brought me to know so many great people along the way.

Starting to learn a musical instrument at eleven years old is quite a challenge but I was up for it. The whole “violin thing” was so new to me and a bit foreign I must admit, but I was so excited to learn. I remember the first few music lessons after school and all the fun times we had. Many kids at that age were not into learning instruments but I thought it was a great new hobby and I was eager to learn more.

By junior high I was getting to know a lot more about reading music and new techniques to use with my bow. Junior high was the time I met so many great friends that I still talk to today. Having people close to you when going to a music class makes the whole experience so much better. One can learn a lot when friends are close by to practice with.

As high school approached I was at a totally new school, while half of my friends went to a different school. But, I still continued on with the violin. There were quite a few old friends there and I loved my new teacher. Half way through my freshman year in W.I., I was forced to move to M.N. to live with my Dad. That was a huge change for me, and unfortunately, Park Rapids schools didn’t offer orchestra as an elective, only band and choir. So, at that point, not being able to afford private lessons, I was forced to resign from orchestra at fifteen years old.

Though I only played in a group for four years, I enjoyed every bit of it and learned a lot. It takes around seven years to master the violin; so I believe I was well on my way putting over half of that time in already. Someday, when life isn’t so hectic, I would love to get back into playing. After all, my experience of learning the violin is one of my greatest memories.

Move Over Spielberg

If I had no constraints on time, money or other such trivial things to fret about, I would probably end up making movies as my dream job. All of the skills and interests I have acquired over the past many years have lead me to a place where I have the technical and artistic acumen to make film making my perfect career. Over the past five years I have honed my skills as a 3D artist and animator, and developed an eye for composition of shot. Before that period I was a regional actor and well known speaker, having won many performing awards. My entire life I have been devoted to storytelling in one form or another.

Movies have always held a fascination to me as a great equalizer amongst people, much like music, my other passion. Not all people can agree on politics, but most can agree that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a great movie, and that Gigli is two hours of your life that you will never get back. Movies can change opinions and lives. I remember the first time I saw The Matrix, it literally changed the way I thought and perceived the world and the people around me. Not in any freaky cyberpunk way. But it did change my philosophy in ways that still ripple through my life. Whenever I have a stray moment of transcendentalist doubt, I just remember the words of Morpheus… “Do you think that’s air you’re breathing now?”

As I said before I am a 3D artist and have worked in the medium for about the past five years. I have been in the process of creating several characters and storylines for ideas I have been developing. I work mainly with a free suite of animation and modeling software. This is the filmmaking I am intensely interested in because I believe this to be the future of the art form. It is a long and involved process which literally takes hundreds of hours of work to see the slightest amount of progress, especially as a one man operation. But the rewards are great when the process is well done and done correctly.

After seeing James Cameron’s AVATAR I find that my hope for the future of my kind of film making wasn’t relegated to second rate kids movies. Often CG (or computer generated) animation is used in the most crude of fashions, like the old stop motion style animations of Ray Harryhausen. Recently this has been the downfall of many studios looking to exploit this technology for profit. They see it as a cheaper way of making bad movies. The capability of virtual environments to accurately mimic physical characteristics, motion, and materials has grown exponentially over the past few years alone. Add to this the immersion of realistic 3D and there is another layer of illusion the filmmaker can use to capture an audience and tell a deep, resounding story. This is something I would truly love to do.

"Oh I Wish the 50's Could Come Back In Style"

History has always been my favorite subject. I love learning about what had to happen to get us where we are today. As a little girl, I never played in the present. I always pretended that it was Civil War time. I have often wished that I could go back and live during a different era of history. As a little girl I wanted that time to be the 1800’s and I still would not mind that, but if I could choose right now, I would choose to go back in time to the 50’s.

There are many reasons why I love the 50’s, but I’ll just explain a couple. Everything was simpler in the 50’s. Life was not moving as fast as it is today. When I think about the 50’s, I think about the show Leave It to Beaver. Children did not have expensive toys to entertain them; they had a ball and a glove. They spent time doing quality activities, not sitting in front of a TV or computer screen all day.

During this era, women rarely worked outside the home and if they did it was not looked on favorably. I like this about the 50’s. I have no problem with women working; I plan on being a working mother myself. I just think it is neat that this was just simply expected. The husband provided for the family and the wife took care of the family. It was not like today where each family decides what is best for them; it was just a known fact that a woman’s place is in the kitchen, not in the workforce.

My favorite thing about the 50’s is the attire. I love women’s clothing from the 50’s. I always picture June Cleaver. She wore dresses that went to just below her knee, high heeled shoes and every hair on her head was perfectly in place. When she was in the kitchen she wore an apron. When she went outside, she wore a stylish hat, coat and gloves. She was a wife and mother, but managed to stay in style at the same time.

The 50’s strike me as a good time in history. I often wish that the 50’s would come back. In a way, I can make it come back. I can apply the things I like about the era to the era I’m living in at the present. Things like watching less TV and spending more time outside. These are little things, but they can make a difference in my life.

(Title is a line from a song by Dean Brody)

Blogging for My First Time!!

Hello everyone! I am very excited that we are learning how to blog in this class. I was a member of a band for 4 years and we had a blog, but it was not my job to keep it up. I just wrote the posts and e-mailed them to a different band member. I recently watched the YouTube video "Brothers" by Dean Brody. "Brothers" is one of my favorite songs because I have a brother that is in Afghanistan right now. One of my favorite lines in the song is, "I have my heroes, but the one I love the most, taught me how to hunt and swing a bat." My brother taught me to do both of these things and has always been my hero. Yes, he is still alive, but as far as I'm concerned, he has already given up his life for his country. He left everything he had to focus his life on one thing, keeping us all safe and free.

"Sometimes freedom makes it hard to live, when it takes things from you that you don't want to give."

Diagnostic Essay

History has always fascinated me. There is a certain allure concerning the events of the past, and the only way to know what really happened is to have witnessed what transpired. First and second hand recollections can only be used as a reference. If I could travel to any point in time, I would select the time period that encompasses the creation of the universe; also known as the Big Bang.

If you want to know who you truly are, it is important to know where you come from. I want to know this information on a fundamental level. I have always wondered how the universe came to be what it is today. If I could go back to that point in time and witness the birth of the planets, of matter itself, I would finally be closer to knowing exactly who and what I am.

According to the most recognized scientific theory the creation of the universe was initiated by a miniscule disturbance in the nothingness that is commonly referred to as space. It is always perplexed me that there is the possibility of something being created from a void. If a tiny ripple in the fabric of space could trigger the creation of countless worlds, you would imagine that there could be a way of harnessing that raw power to solve the Earth’s current energy crisis. To witness such an event would be indescribably amazing for me.

It is often said that when one door closes, another is opened. This is applicable to me because if I had the ability to travel to the moment directly preceding the Big Bang, a thousand new questions would replace that mystery. My thirst for knowledge is never-ending, and the more intangible the answer seems, the more time I tend to devote to the subject. It doesn’t truly matter to me whether or not I will arrive at a definitive answer, what I enjoy are the possibilities.

great guitar player

I was recently looking at music videos on YouTube when I came across young guitar player. There are many players on the internet but I haven’t seen one this amazing for a long time. His name is Tallan Latz. He is a nine year old boy who plays the blues. I have never seen so much technical and improvisational talent in someone so young. There have been tons of child prodigies who grow up to have varying levels playing ability and they are almost always a disappointment. I can’t imagine that Tallan will have the same fate. I think that when he is older he will surely be a guitar ledged

If I Could Go Back In Time, I’d Profit
I like to say that I am a woman of strong moral beliefs, and maybe for the most part I am, but I would have to say that in all honesty, if I had the opportunity to go back in time, I would definitely turn a profit doing it.

Of all the eras in time that I could travel back to, I would pick the early twentieth century, particularly around the 1920’s. Everything was fun back then, the outfits, the attitudes. There were gangsters and prohibition, cool cars and fast lifestyles. The best part about this era is that for my little plan to unfold I need the witch hunt to be over, because what I’m going to show these people will seem like pure sorcery!

I will go back to 1920’s New York City and pass myself off as some wicked inventor and once I make a name for myself with the little luxuries stolen from the future, I would unveil the big stuff. Image the surprise of the people when I introduce the concept of television with sound, let alone color television! I know, this is probably going to destroy the future of mankind as we know it, but I couldn’t resist getting a little fame for myself.

Once the TV was a smash hit, which I’m sure it would be, I would pretend to go to work once again on another magical invention and whip out the IPOD Touch. Maybe I would be ousted for sorcery, maybe I would become rich, and maybe I would stick around for awhile. I don’t think I would want to return to the future and see what kind of mess I made anyway.

Animal Cop Erika

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been around animals. While living on a farm at one point in my life, I took count of every barking, mooing, swimming, slobbering, fuzzy, dirty, sleeping, purring creature we owned and was astounded that they added up to 33. That’s a lot of attention needed to be given, as well as food! So here I was, barefoot and ready to pet anything. I never really had an interest in racing or showing our animals, just playing and petting them. My interest came more from the area of caring and defending for them. Neglect of these innocent animals was the last thing I wanted. That is why becoming an animal cop would be my ultimate dream job.

When I watch “Animal Planet”, I like to envision myself as that strong-willed woman holding vindictive animal owners accountable for abusing and neglecting their animals. I would love to hold an authoritative disposition like that by putting cruel animal owners in their place. However, the realities of that job don’t fit my personality. I may not be able to hold a stern voice, and I would most likely let my emotional side get the best of me. Many of the cases dealt with are saddening and infuriating, even though the job is rewarding. I have seriously considered pursuing this dream job but I would need to move to a big city where the crime rate is high. Also, I would first need to go through schooling to be a police officer and then broaden that career into animal rescuing.

Even though life presents obstacles, I am not limited to what I want to do with my life. That is why I’ve chosen to go to college to get my bachelor’s degree as a veterinarian technician. Getting a higher degree in this field will only open the doors for many other opportunities I never thought would be presented to me. I will still be involved in animal rescues and continue to fight for quality treatment of animals. I do know that my future career will be rewarding for me either way, because working with animals for the rest of my life would still be a dream come true.

My first blogg

This is my first time taking an online course and also to write on a blog. I am kinda computer illiterate, so this could be interesting.
I really like that Iron Mitten blog. They must take a long time to make those little guys. Take a look http://iron-mitten.blogspot.com/

My intro to blogging

Thus far, blogging is very foreign to me. I am kind of confused by this and wonder if it will make it to any of the eyes of my classmates! Here goes my trial run....

My name is Kimberly Larson. I am the mother of an amazing toddler named Elijah. I am currently majoring in social work and can't wait to graduate so I can save the world, one person at a time. I am looking forward to another exciting semester, but even more to the summer vacation that follows it!
