A Good Man is Hard to Find

A Good Man is Hard to Find
In this story The Misfit is a religious pretender; in a way he almost mocks the old lady’s religious beliefs by letting her believe that he shares them. For example when the grandma tells The Misfit “If you would pray, Jesus would help you” (363) after he tells her about his father and that he never killed him, The Misfit agrees getting her hopes up that he won’t kill the rest of them just to tell her that he does not want help.
The Grandmother has true faith in that she believes that there is good in him and that he will show them mercy if he sees that she has hope in him. She maintains her faith until the end as she continuously asks for help from Jesus. She achieves religious grace when her head cleared for an instant. (364) Then she murmured “Why your one of my babies. Your one of my own children” (364) she is seeing him as one of Gods children not as the monster that he is. For this she has paid with her life when she reaches out to touch him he shoots her three times in the chest. You really see how cold hearted The Misfit is when he makes the comment about the grandma that “She would have been a good woman, if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.” (365)

I think a reliious pretender is one who feels they believe in jesus, but really they know they don't. In this story I feel the grandmother is a pretender. She is the only one who is fighting with misfit about what will happen. She only cares about herself and not the rest of the family that she put in harms way. Grandmother tried to use jesus to save herself from the misfit. This doesn't sound like something jesus would do to me. I think the family had faith because they didn't fight what was going to happen, they just wanted to be together in the end. While the misfit tried to separate them the family wanted to be together even though they knew what was coming. The misfit just wanted to be mean and thought he was doing the right thing by ending lives. He was a pretender when he acted as a religious singer. Now he just claims that jesus is to blame for his actions because he raised people from the dead. The misfit is just correcting the balance that was thrown off. I think that violence brings out the true believers because they trust God will make sure they are okay in the end. When they believe God will take care of them, they go to heaven. Every person knows if they are being a pretender or a true believer and you can tell by their actions.
