The Lottery

In the Lottery, people in the village would come out and meet in the square, between the post office and the bank around 10:00 am. This would occur once a year and could take a couple of days to conduct. Mr. Summer's was the man in charge of the event, so therefore he didn't have to participate in the stoning. As the people were gathering on June 27th, for the lottery to begin, one person was missing. The person that was missing was Mrs. Hutchinson, she forgot what time it was and came running with her apron on from doing the dishes. Little did she know that she would be the unlucky one to be stoned that day.

As they began opening their papers from family to family, the people would sigh in relief to know that they would be living a little bit longer. As it became to come closer to the time the Hutchinson's were to open their fate, the feelings began to shift from being happy to being worried. The Hutchinson's were the last to draw and Bill and Tessie knew one of their family members were going to be stoned. The paper with the black spot, was the spot of death. Bill opened his first to see that it was blank, Tessie was last and she knew it was her. Bill went over to her and opened it for her. Tessie knew that her life was over and that she wasn't going home to make dinner for the family. As the paper was opened the black spot was on her paper and Mr. Summer's did as well. Mr Summer's said, "All right Folks, Let's finish quickly." As Mrs. Hutchinson went in front of the crowd she yelled, "It isn't fair, it isn't right!" I have to agree with her stoning someone to death wasn't fair and it wasn't right!
