Where Are You Going, Where Have you Been?
I feel sorry for Connie. It's like she is stuck in a place that if she really thought about it, would not want to be in. Shae may think that her fun life with the boys is all great, but she soon finds out that it's not all that it's cracked up to be. Sexual assault is not to be taken lightly. Arnold Friend used all the familiar ways to try to "get" Connie. Threatening violence and using her family as "bait". Demanding when asking or telling her to do something, "We ain't leaving until you come with us."(516) Threatening to harm her family is worse than threatening to harm herself, "You don't want your people in any trouble, do you?"(520) Arnold knew (almost positivly from past experiances) just what to say or do that would make Connie do what he wants. He knew how to have power over her, and he did it. I was a little confused by the phone deal, I couldn't figure out if the screaming or noices she heard in the phone was her imagination, or if somehow Arnold or Ellie had controll over the phone. It's very posible that Connie's mind was causing all these crazy things to happen because Arnold was telling her all these horid things. Such as when he said he would break his promise of not breaking the screan door if Connie picked up the phone.
