"So Mexicans are Taking Jobs from Americans" by Jimmy Santiago Baca
This poem really makes me angry. No, Mexican people are not “Taking Jobs from Americans” (Title of Poem) as listed in the poem “with rifles” (line 2) or with “a knife at your throat” (Line 10), but they are taking jobs from Americans and not paying taxes, refusing to learn our language, and collecting welfare money. I ask anyone who has ever been in Mexico, “Was a translator provided to you when you went there?” It is a sad situation no doubt, but if they come to our country to labor and collect a wage that could be given to an American shouldn’t they be treated as an American and not better than an American? I live near a town that employs many people from Mexico. They now cannot even have their summer celebration because of the trouble the Mexicans cause during this event. I know that you cannot judge a race by the actions of a few, but America needs to take care of its own people first. If they want the wages and the perks of America then they need to become Americans – speak our language, pay our unfair taxes, and join our society. Sorry if I offended anyone.

By the way Mexicans do pay taxes even though they get low salary because they are not legal. If there were no Mexicans the construction business wouldn't be as big as it is now. Also can you imagine an American being the gardener or holding a leaf blower doing yard work like the Mexicans. Think about it Chad

Are you serious??? One thing that I hate about people is ignorance!! You are sooo sure of what you are saying but you have no clue about what immigrants go through... You just repeat and repeat what someone said without fundaments. First of all, anybody legal or illegal in this country pays for taxes!!! Even illegal immigrants do, all the money that is deducted from their checks every month at the end of the day where does it go??? Do you think they can claim some money back??? Do you think they receive in April a big juicy check from the goverment?? Do you really think that the government gives them any money?? They collect wellfare?? How??? Try to go to any gov. agency and see if they will give you anything without a social security!!!. How do you expect that mexicans learn english, when they have to work more than 12 hours a day, or maybe work 2or 3 jobs (with a $7 p/h)to pay their bills. Do you think they have the money and the time to go to college? Many of you take spanish in school 3 years of more, and at the only thing you learn is "hasta la vista baby"..... If you go to any other country everyone speaks more than 1 language... So it should be a shame that you having the opportunity, the time, the money and the support of your goverment to go to a college, come up with such an ignorant opinion.... By the way is no my intention to offend.
YOUR Ignorant. Lots of illegal Mexican immigrants work UNDER THE TABLE. That means NO TAXES. Even if they are paying taxes they send most of that money back to Mexico, spend it in Mexican stores, who send that money back to Mexico, and buy their goods from Mexico. That means that the nations income is LEAVING the country which is basically worse than not paying taxes. Get Legal or get a clue. If you think being "bi-lingual" is difficult, you have a lot more to learn as to the relevance of the WHY not the WHY NOT. Most People DON"T WANT to learn Spanish, and they shouldn't have too. There is room for "Legal" immigrants not "Illegal" ones. IF YOUR ILLEGAL YOUR JUST A CRIMINAL LEACHING OFF THE SYSTEM.
